Kathe's Pot-Bellied Pig experience dates back to 1996 when a friend gave her a 2 year-old Pot-Bellied Pig. Ever since that momentous day, Kathe has been involved in pig rescue–finding pigs homes and people pigs! Her nickname, while in Las Vegas, was "The Pig Lady"! Pig trick training is her passion, as well as helping new pig owners adapt to their new pets.
Kathe lives in Central, Utah in a log home with her husband Reggie and her 4 pigs. Beating the icy cold winter is the biggest challenge for her and her piggies. Since they develop extra fat and "insulation", they are able to endure. And luckily, brooder heat lamps (clamp type) are available (125 watts) and specially designed "hog lights" are avaiable through farm suppliers. They hold a 250 heat lamp and are postioned in the middle of the shed (hung from the ceiling) and the pigs keep quite warm on freezing cold nights.
Kathe recently recovered from ovarian cancer in 2006 and is returning to her porcine duties with full energy once again. Her fight against cancer began in March and ended in October. Since it was late stage, she is encouraging all women who get their annual Pap, to also get a CA125 blood test to detect early stage ovarian cancer. Along with other tests, this can save many women's lives and high treatment costs.
Along with her porcine friends, Kathe loves to ride horses. She also plays classical piano and does graphic arts on her Mac.
